🐐 YOU'VE GOAT TO KNOW! Do Goats Have Different Personalities?
Share
Spend enough time around a herd of goats and eventually you'll realize something:
There is no such thing as “just a goat.”
There's the curious one.
The quiet one.
The bossy one.
The one who follows you everywhere.
The one who wants absolutely nothing to do with whatever nonsense everyone else is participating in.
And then...
There's the one who somehow manages to be involved in EVERYTHING.
You know who you are. 😂🐐
Welcome back to You've Goat to Know!, where every Friday we dig a little deeper into the fascinating—and occasionally ridiculous—world of goats.
Today's question is:
Do goats really have individual personalities?
The short answer?
Oh, absolutely.
🧠 One Herd. Lots of Individuals.
Goats are social animals, but being part of a herd doesn't mean every goat behaves exactly the same way.
Individual goats can differ in things like:
- Boldness
- Curiosity
- Sociability
- Cautiousness
- Activity level
- Reactions to unfamiliar situations
- Interest in people
- Persistence when trying to solve a problem
One goat may walk straight up to something new.
Another may stand twenty feet away thinking:
“You first.”
One wants scratches.
Another wants snacks.
One wants both.
And one simply wants to know why you're standing in their pasture without providing refreshments.
🐐 Nature, Experience & Environment
A goat's personality isn't necessarily the result of one single thing.
Genetics can play a role in temperament, but so can age, early experiences, environment, social relationships, and interactions with people.
A goat that has had calm, positive experiences around humans may behave differently around people than one that hasn't.
Young goats may also behave differently as they grow and mature.
And relationships within the herd matter too.
Because goats don't just live beside one another.
They have a social structure.
👑 Every Herd Has Politics
Okay...
Maybe they don't hold elections.
But goats establish social relationships and hierarchies within their herd.
Some animals are more dominant.
Others are more submissive.
You'll see goats communicate through body posture, movement, displacement, vocalizations, and—yes—occasionally a good old-fashioned headbutt.
One goat may routinely claim the best resting spot.
Another may be first at the feeder.
Another seems perfectly content staying out of everybody else's business.
And then there's usually somebody who appears to have appointed themselves:
SUPERVISOR OF EVERYTHING.
Nobody remembers hiring them.
Nevertheless...
They're on duty.
🐐 A Little Disclaimer From the Pasture...
Before we start making introductions, we should probably mention something:
These are NOT all of our goats.
Not even close. 😂
We're just introducing you to a few members of the MLB Farm herd whose personalities made them perfect for today's categories.
There are plenty more characters living out in those pastures—and trust us, they have personalities of their own.
So consider this less of a complete herd directory and more like...
Meet the Cast: Part One. 😂🐐
Because around here, there's always another goat with a story.
📸 Meet the Personalities of MLB Farm
Now here's where we're going to do something a little different.
Rather than simply telling you about different goat personalities...
We're going to introduce you to some of ours!
Because the goats of MLB Farm are perfectly capable of demonstrating these categories themselves.
And we're pretty sure several of them have been preparing for this moment their entire lives.
These titles are not recognized by any official goat organization. They are, however, VERY well supported by evidence.
🐐 THE INVESTIGATOR
Starring: Shadow Lady
Shadow Lady needs to know what is happening. New bucket? Investigate it. Something moved? Investigate it. Human doing something suspiciously interesting? Definitely investigate it. Curiosity is not a hobby for Shadow Lady. It is a full-time position.
🍪 THE SNACK BANDIT
Starring: Shez Yo Mama Jama
If food exists anywhere in the general vicinity, Mama Jama is going to know about it. She does not steal snacks; she simply believes all snacks have been incorrectly assigned until proven otherwise. And when opportunity presents itself? Use it if you got it!
🎭 THE DRAMA QUEEN
Starring: Gal’s Girl
Gal’s Girl makes sure her opinion is heard. Breakfast late? Complaint filed. Somebody else got attention? Management will be hearing about it. She is not being dramatic—she is simply making sure EVERYONE understands the seriousness of the situation.
❤️ THE SHADOW
Starring: Hay Sailor
Hay Sailor has decided that wherever her people are, that is probably where she belongs. Walking the pasture? She is nearby. Doing chores? She is supervising. Trying to photograph somebody else? There is a good chance Hay Sailor will find a way into the action. Her motto: “You belong to me now.”
🚪 THE ESCAPE ARTIST
Starring: Rosie’s Posey
Posey treats fences as suggestions, gates as puzzles, and suspiciously small openings as invitations to conduct further research. She is not escaping. She is just checking to see what is on the other side. Any unauthorized pasture departure remains under investigation.
😌 THE INTROVERT
Starring: Valerie
Valerie enjoys the herd without needing to be the center of it. She appreciates peace, quiet, and a little personal space. Her philosophy is simple: “I love you all. From over here.” Every herd needs somebody who is perfectly content watching the chaos instead of creating it.
⛰️ THE MOUNTAIN GOAT WANNABE
Starring: Rosie’s Ring
Posey’s twin sister, Rosie’s Ring, believes the best place to be is the highest place available. Rock, stump, hill, platform—or something that was absolutely not intended to support a goat—if there is a higher spot, she wants it.
🐐THE BOSS
Starring: Speckle Pants
Speckle Pants carries herself like management. She keeps an eye on the herd, knows what is happening, and has the presence of a goat who expects everyone else to get with the program. She is not bossy. She is The Boss.
🐐THE DON
Starring: King’s Black Mark
King is our herd sire, family man, and certified big stinky buck. He is built like he means business, keeps an eye on the family, and during certain times of year wears a natural fragrance we affectionately call Eau de Buck. You do not always have to see The Don to know he is nearby. Sometimes…you smell him first. Respect the family. Respect The Don. Bring snacks.
💡 You've Goat to Know! Quick Fact
Individual behavioral differences aren't limited to humans—or even to traditional household pets.
Goats can consistently differ from one another in how they approach new situations, interact socially, explore their environment, and respond to people.
Which means when a goat owner tells you:
“Oh, THAT one is trouble.”
There may be a considerable amount of historical evidence supporting that statement. 😂
🐐 From Our Herd
Knowing the individual personalities in a herd is one of the things that makes raising goats so much fun.
Eventually you recognize more than their markings.
You learn who will come running.
Who will hang back.
Who wants attention.
Who wants food.
Who's probably going to climb something.
And who becomes suspiciously quiet right before you discover something you really wish they hadn't discovered.
They're all goats.
They're all part of the same herd.
But they're definitely individuals.
And that's part of what makes them so entertaining to live with.
❤️ Now YOU'VE Goat to Know!
So yes...
Goats have personality.
LOTS of personality.
Some are bold.
Some are cautious.
Some are affectionate.
Some are independent.
Some are incredibly curious.
And some seem to wake up every morning and choose chaos.
We love them all anyway.
Actually...
That's probably part of why we love them. ❤️🐐
And remember the official MLB Farm personality rule:
USE IT IF YOU GOT IT! 😂
